For 10/25: Yale Fraternity stoops to new low

Yale Fraternity stoops to new low: they marched around the Women's Freshman dorms saying, "“No means yes, yes means anal” and “My name is Jack, I’m a necrophiliac, I f—-- dead women, and fill them with my semen.”

Appalling, but I was impressed with their apology. What I want to know from you is did they really not understand that rape is serious beforehand?

  1. Its hard for me to believe that they didn't understand that rape was serious, but it may be true that they really didn't. I think a lot of people may be unaware of how it really is a big deal. Some people may never even truly understand the definition of rape. I thought it was ridiculous how they went to an all woman campus and yelled such disgusting things like that with a whole fraternity and pledges. It seems like the apology is sincere. Hopefully they'll prove themselves to the college and the community.

  2. It was important to apologize and not the right thing to say. They did the right thing by stating how wrong they were and how they do not want to incite rape or even to say that is OK. Just a huge mistake by some immature men. I am glad that this made headlines because it just goes to show that there is a line that can be crossed and it needs to be brought to everyones attention.

  3. Under no circumstances am I condoning their immature behavior. However, in their defense as a college student I see this everyday. Reckless joking amongst peers in public places. I don't think they intended to be hurtful. This goes back to the famous warnings of think before you act. I think they where guilty of a bad joke not thinking that rape is ok. Only a fool would promote rape especially on a college campus.

  4. I just got done watching "Real Issue"s with Jane Valez and she was reporting about was going on at Yale; including the video HLN was sent of the men chanting. I found it tasteless, sick and stupid. I agree with Jane, that their pictures need to be plastered everywhere on Yale's campus; so they themselves KNOW what its like to be vulnerable, scrutinized and "raped". I wonder, however; if Yale will give taps on the hand, or if they will uphold their stringent policies and send a clear cut message that this type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. I do not consider what they said as "teasing" or joking around. ===NO MEANS YES and yes means anal? Their chant is/was in "response" to a cheer that- Take Back the Night-(Sexual & Domestic Violence Awareness rallies) uses and they -those students all male according to the video tape I saw; took a serious subject and vilefied and degraded women everywhere. And lets all be ADULTS now; we hopefully have been taught between right and wrong; but what about DOING THE RIGHT thing and saying no, this isn't the right thing we should be doing, OR Saying.........

  5. I think they did know about rape being serious beforehand seeing that they are college students. I don't think it took for them to chant cruel words around a female dorm to finally come up with the conclusion that rape is serious. Seeing that they are college men, I know they have been exposed to situations about rape rather it was from television, reading about it, or learning about it in school. Even though they wrote a letter apologizing, I feel as if the letter was just to clear their names. I don't think that they would have wrote a letter if there weren't any consequences behind their actions because I feel they knew what they were doing was wrong beforehand.
