Fighting back against the early sexualization of girls

What problem does student Yanique Richards have with the Media?

  1. Yanique is absolutely correct! The Media does specifically target young people, especially women about HOW they must look, dress and act. I remember being so depressed as a teenager about trying to find clothes to fit me-then a healthy size 12. Clothing was "geared" towards size 6 and under; even 25+ years ago; and it has only gotten worse in regards to looks (over sexualizing) young women and weight, and being inundated with "this" size and "that"size! Then for young men to see all of this "sexuality" being played out enhances their misconceptions of what a woman "should" look like and be. For society to "dictate" what a person SHOULD look like is sad. Let a person be WHO they are, NOT what they SHOULD look like, according to "societal standards". I read a report once that says the average US woman is typically a size 14, but yet FEW women of this size are ever shown on tv. When model Emme (Melisa Aronson)spoke about her childhood, she even pointed out how her father circled her stomach and thighs with a marker, stating she needed to lose weight. YET, she is one of the world's leading models at a "plus-size"; which once again society has dictated the word like being healthy is bad? Come on already! I'll take being healthy over being sick ANY day of the week! It's no wonder eating disorders and teenage suicide is on the rise, especially in the U.S. She is also correct that everywhere on you look on tv; whether it is a show, commercial, movies; is a woman being put in the position of a "sexual"/YOU MUST look like this connotation.

  2. After watching this video and hearing Yanique's point everything makes sense. The Media today targets young teenagers and girls any way they can. The media tries to tell young girls how they should look and all the things they should be doing in order to be sexy. I truly think this is a disturbing problem we have in the U.S. Nothing seems to ever change either. Commercials, movies, and music videos, just become worst and worst over time. By showing young girls what they should be doing and exposing them to ways to be sexy at such a young age the media is basically trying to turn them into young sexy symbols.

  3. This was a very powerful clip. The message was clear media in the United States today has targeted young women across the country. You could say they have brain washed them in some sense, you must fit this image and if you are anything else you are not acceptable. I believe it is very easy for young women to fall into the media's idea of what a women should be and do everything in their power to fit that idea. This is a very sad reality and I believe that every young person out there should really stand for who they are and be happy about it because we are each great as individuals.
