Are we willing to put ourselves in a dangerous situation for "beauty?"

Also, is it okay to have take the dangerous chemical treatments on your hair if you know the stylist's health could suffer?

  1. Whatever happened to love yourself for who you are? That is something we hear all of the time, all the while seeing images like this saying; well yeah, love yourself for who you are, but make sure you put more Formaldehyde in your hair first. The picture speaks volumes. I couldn't imagine walking into a salon and seeing people with gas masks on their faces.

I don't think it is OK to allow stylists to do this, either. This has so many levels that can be dissected. 1) How does this person justify poisoning them self for beauty? 2) What has happened in their lives that they think they deserve to be poisoned? 3) Are they lonely? Because it seems as if a person were to have a support system around them, they would not go to such extreme lengths to prove them self. 4) How do you explain your reasoning for putting someone else's life in jeopardy for your benefit? 5) I am sure those chemicals seep into their brains and bloodstreams, what are permanent damage are they doing to their bodies? The list can go on and on.

The real tragedy in this piece is that women will do whatever they have to do to "belong". What does that say about us as a whole? What do we value? Maybe beauty is only skin deep. Of course it's not, but after reading this, it makes you wonder, and if you are an adolescent girl, or a young woman, or even a grown woman you are drawn to this type of advertisement. And probably the most ironic thing to this whole piece is, all of the girls and women I know who either have straight or curly hair at one point have wanted the opposite.
