YouTube - Ciara - Like A Boy. Comment by 9/13

YouTube - Ciara - Like A Boy
A student sent me the link to this video. Why does the lyrical voice want to be a boy?

  1. Ciara wants to switch rolls with there boyfriend because she wants to show him how it would feel if she didn't answer his phone calls, if she had a thing on the side and made him cry, and ask questions when she's out at four in the morning. She wants to know if things will change or if everything would still be okay with him.

  2. Ciara wants to play the roll of a boy so that she could show her boyfriend all the things that he does to her. In the song she use the line "I'm messing with your head again, dose of your own medicine" to let her boyfriend know that what she would do to him if she was to play the role of a boy, wouldn't be any different from what he have been doing to her. She wants her boyfriend to have to go through all the things that he put her through, such as lying, not answering her phone calls, having his own bank account aside from their joint account, coming in at 4:00 in the morning, etc. Ciara wants to know would the rules change up since she is a woman playing the role of a man or would they still apply, seeing that men must of think it is alright to do things that they do. Ciara is trying to send the message to men, asking how would they feel if women went out and did things that they do. Would men then take their own advise about not getting mad and to just handle it? No, they wouldn't want women to treat them that way.

  3. I believe Ciara sends a very strong message in this music video. She questions the behavior of men and wether or not women would be able to behave the same way. Would been be willing to accept the fact that was not answering their phone calls or be out doing what they feel during late hours of the night? I believe she is just trying to emphasize the fact that women put up with many different things that men do but if the roles were to be switched there would be many problems.

  4. Why can't we just switch roles. Why doe men have one role and women another? Where do these roles come from?

  5. Ciara's Like a Boy video shows that men have double standards for women when it comes to relationships. Ciara shows different scenarios thru her lyrics/video and explains that a "man" would not be able to handle the relationship if the roles were switched. Ciara confronts the man in the video and basically lays him out (not physically but verbally). She does it by confronting him for his actions and has him question his own action by giving him a "dose of his own medicine". In the same token, I think Ciara points out that even without switching roles that women are strong individuals by tolerating a relationship (like the video). Also in comparison with Ciara's Like a Boy video is If I were a Boy-Beyonce. As far as switching roles, I think women can do it and should do it but I think it depends on the woman's personality. I personally would not tolerate a relationship described in the lyrics, but some women do. As far as men having one role and women having another role is what society has catergorized as acceptable. For example in her video, when she does a sycronized march with the female dancers, I think it symbolizes how men are trying to conform to what society pictures what "men" should be. These roles can be passed down from one generation to another, culture, heredity, and media.

  6. The lyrics to this song describe how Ciara wants to be boy and take his role because it is a much simpler lifestyle. She explains how a boy can basically do whatever he wants and no one will really say anything or judge him. Unlike the women role which is the total opposite. Ciara also explains in this video how some guys act like it's ok to treat a girl however they want, but when us women try and do that to them it's a whole different story and it's looked at as being a whore or trashy. Ciara sends a strong message and in my opinion girls should act like this once in awhile just to show men that they need some respect too.

  7. Ciara in this video wants to be a boy to show boys what it feels like to be the girl. How guys get to stay out late and its ok for them but if a girl did that then she would get in trouble. She is saying that the boys and girls don’t get treated the same. She also says if they switch roles that guys wouldn’t be able to handle it and i think it is true. The roles are formed by society and from history the men get away with stuff like cheating while the girls get looked at differently. If they did switch roles the man would understand how some women feel and go through that is the message she is trying to overall convey.

  8. We all have specific roles in society, and for some of the roles, it is completely unfair on how men get away with such things. I believe Ciara is trying to make a point on how being a women is unfair and how men have it a lot easier. Yes, not all things men do are easy or fair, but they do have a lot of things handed to them. Ciara wants to show how women do not have it easy and that men should take a walk in our shoes and see what its like in our lives. Ciara isn't saying how she wants to be a man, but wants to be treated with respect and have the same equalities.

  9. I feel that women feel as if men have it easier when it comes to relationships. In a relationship its normal for the man to go out with the guys and look at hot girls. If his woman was to do that she would be disrespecting him. The woman is supposed to submit and be loyal to her man and I disagree with that. I feel it should be mutual. Each relationship is different and I disagree with the fact that women in relationships are so harshley judged compared to how we judge the men!!!
