Leading cause of death during pregnancy? Murder by partner. Comment by 9/13

A student in class wanted to comment on this fact on the Blog. What do you make of this fact?

For references to this statistic and others, check out the NOW page with the statistics on Violence Against Women.

Also, check out the government's Bureau of Justice Statistics, where it says:

Female murder victims are substantially more likely than male murder victims to have been killed by an intimate

In recent years -

  • About one third of female murder victims were killed by an intimate.
  • About 3% of male murder victims were killed by an intimate (and here you have to factor in that studies show that in about half of these the woman is acting in self-defense.)
  • Of all female murder victims, the proportion killed by an intimate has been increasing.
  • Of male murder victims, the proportion killed by an intimate has dropped.

  1. It absolutely amazes me the Federal Gov't KNOWS these statistics for Domestic Abuse & Violence; but is inactive to designing ways to PREVENT abuse against women.I ask them, why the inability to recognize that this is a real EPIDEMIC of crime against women, done (primarily) by their MALE counter-parts? Then taking into account UNREPORTED crimes; makes me why anyone would allow themselves to be put through this and NOT report the crime; and wonder if women can actually stand-up for themselves and help end the violence against them and our counterparts...... This entire season Dr. Phil is bringing light to Domestic Violence with "End the Silence: On Domestic Violence". a More frightening statistic is this: EVERY 15 SECONDS a woman is a victim of Domestic Violence. Add with that, the amount of women that are victims while pregnant; hence the children are then first-hand victims themselves, that are victims of Domestic Violence. Just what has this Nation become?
