For 3/28--Disney topic sent by student

Have you seen the trailer for Mars Needs Moms? According to this blogger (http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2011/03/24/finally-a-disney-film-in-which-mom-is-neither-dead-nor-witch/), how are moms usually portrayed in Disney films? And how are they portrayed in this particular film?

  1. According to this blogger moms in Disney movies are usually portrayed as either a dead angel, or an evil witch. The difference in this movie is that they are not necessarily focusing on the "moms" but the "parenting." It could almost suggest that the term mothering gets changed to parenting. I feel like this movie is a more realistic approach to family situations.

  2. In most Disney films there are no moms because either they died or were just absent(Aladin, The little Mermaid, Bambi, Sleeping Beauty,Snow White, Beauty and the Beast,Fox and the hound, Cinderella,Peter Pan,and the Jungle book just to name a few). This movie, however, is one that has a strong mother-figure roll. This film stresses not to take mothers for granted and without them life would be very difficult. The usual Disney films deal with coping with the absence of moms where as this one deals with fighting for them. It's nice to see an "alive" mom in a Disney film for a change :)

  4. It says that mothers, nanny's or any sort of mother figure in Disney movies are either an angel or a devil. I think that this is false in real world terms because not all mothers are either good or bad.. they can be in between. the movie Cinderella is an example of a bad mother or in that case step mom, which in putting out an example that step moms are evil. Toy story is an example of a movie where the mother is good. I also came to the conclusion that finding an example of a movie with a good mom character was very difficult. In this case I think that Disney needs to work on this aspect of their movies.
