Option for 2/21: Teens Trying to get contraciption in Texas

Mrs. Bush, Abstinence and Texas - NYTimes.com
Abstinence only education is still alive and well in Texas!

Consider this quote from Gale Collins:

For one thing, it’s extremely tough for teenagers to get contraceptives in Texas. “If you are a kid, even in college, if it’s state-funded you have to have parental consent,” said Susan Tortolero, director of the Prevention Research Center at the University of Texas in Houston.

Plus, the Perry government is a huge fan of the deeply ineffective abstinence-only sex education. Texas gobbles up more federal funds than any other state for the purpose of teaching kids that the only way to avoid unwanted pregnancies is to avoid sex entirely. (Who knew that the health care reform bill included $250 million for abstinence-only sex ed? Thank you, Senator Orrin Hatch!) But the state refused to accept federal money for more expansive, “evidence-based” programs.

“Abstinence works,” said Governor Perry during a televised interview with Evan Smith of The Texas Tribune.

“But we have the third highest teen pregnancy rate among all states in the country,” Smith responded.

  1. This topic I don't completely understand. Texas ranks as the 3rd highest teen pregnancy state but yet they make it impossible for teens and young adults to get birth control. Texas receives more federal funds than any other state for abstinence only education. There are no facts in favor of this education to prove that this it is effective. My view is that abstinence only education is a waste of time and money.

  2. Alright lets be honest here.. Teens are going to have sex if they want to have sex, and obviously girls in Texas are getting it in if there ranked 3rd highest in teen pregnancy of all the states.. So teens in Texas must not be comprehending the "abstinence" only teaching method that they are being provided with.. So my view on abstinence only education is that for one its not working obviously and its been a waste of time and money. Sincerely yours, Todd Cramer

  3. I strongly disagree with abstinence-only sex education, so this is a very hard subject for me to comment on. In my opinion, whether female or male, if a person wants to have sex, they WILL have sex, regardless of any kind of "abstinence only" education they have or have not received. So basically, not providing birth control is not only causing unnecessary pregnancies that could of easily been prevented, but also costing the U.S. millions and millions of dollars.

  5. I I disagree with abstinence only...I feel that the government dont have the right to have a say so in anybody sex life. If a teenager wants to have sex then he/she will do so. the government is the main reason why there percentages are so high!!!
