1 of 2 EC options for 8/30: Janelle Monáe - Tightrope [feat. Big Boi] (Video)

What do you think about this video? Anyone want to try to apply a feminist analysis to the video?

  1. When you first "pre-viewed" this video in class, the music caught my attention. (because it was a music video) for MY perspective of this video is that women have served in the "sub-servient role to men since the beginning of time; and IF that woman goes "too high, or to low"; they are viewed as either too strong(Bitch) or too weak. My motto has always been "Lead, follow, or get the ****, out of the way." So my perception of "WALKING ON the Tightrope" is about adhearing to societal norms/views of "the perfect woman" as being one who is not "too high-aka:the bitch" or "too low-weak".

  2. I absolutely loved and enjoyed this music video, I believe this artist has a great voice and is entertaining to watch. To apply a feminist analysis to it, i think its amazing how she dresses the way she does in this video. She is not "flaunting" her body out to her viewers and instead is taking a pop edge with her dancing and is dressed in what a man would more than likely dress like. Outside of what Katy Perry and Beyonce would show a little more skin; her "assets" are fully covered which focuses more on herself as an artist rather and her music than her body image.

" 'Tightrope' takes place at the Palace of the Dogs. A lot of the greats were admitted into this place, like Charlie Parker and Jimi Hendrix, to name a couple," she previously told Rap-Up. "We wanted to keep it raw and funky - just having it in an insane asylum made it that much cooler to me."

  4. I enjoyed watching the video especially applying the feminist anaylsis to it. I agree with the previous comments made about the video such as "too high, or to low" how women can be classified as one or the other, but not in the middle. I also enjoyed how the singer dressed in men's clothing using her words and not her body to get her message across to the viewer. I also thought it was ironic in the video when the nurse(a conformist-by fitting into the political standard of a woman) basically rats out the singer for causing a disturbance. Then the singer is lead back to her room. This is like society, women constantly critize each other on their view of what is right. They should instead stand together as one.

  5. I really enjoyed this music video and I love how catchy the song was. While watching this video I tried to analyze parts of it that related to feminism. The one part that caught my attention was the chorus "whether your high or low you gotta get on the tightrope". In my opinion it meant that whether women are standardized in a high or low way they need to be ready for whatever the world has to say about them. Women are always being judged whether it is by their actions or what they have to say. I really enjoyed how Janelle presented this video and how how when watching it she makes women really feel impowered. (Alicia Conenna)

  6. I enjoyed this music video for a number of reasons the song itself, the actual beat, the fact that she could really sing, and also for the dancing. But I believe that this video could represent feminism for the simple fact that this video, song, and wardrobe all challenge the "women have to be in some way shape or form sexual in whatever they do ....as far as the music world".

  7. i think the long, robed skinny guys with mirrors for faces represent her self consciousness and self doubt and throughout the end part there she's trying to escape them. So when she's whether your high or low, you've got to follow your dreams, i think she's talking about whether your confident or not. This goes along with the long skinny guys being guard members and they were trying to suppress the freedom and dancing going on in the other room. If any thing, this is her feminist message to girls, don't let insecurity stop you, but everyone needs to hear this at some point.
