Rape Victim in Saudi Arabia Scheduled to be Lashed 100 Times In Saudia Arabia, a woman who is raped is both victim and perpetrator of a crime, and will be punished. What is your reaction?

Despite realizing that most Americans would regard this story as "abominable", I can't help but feel that people, especially from a Western society, shouldn't judge a story like this too harshly. Yes, it is tragic that this woman is struggling to make a living and was sexually assaulted, but there isn't much anyone can do about it. We must be tolerant of Arabian culture and avoid judging that society by our own standards. It is everyone's responsibility to avoid being ethnocentric as much as possible. Just as it's normal to see a woman in the U.S. drive a car - it is normal for women in Saudi Arabia to legally not be able to leave the house without a male family member's permission - and that's okay.

  2. I think it's important to acknowledge that even in this country we have a high tolerance for rape. And while we don't officially punish rape victims, we do often blame them, which is not all that different from the way the treat rape victims in Saudia Arabia.
