for 2/7: Government action to curb repo. freedoms

The New Abortion Wars - A Highly Intrusive Federal Bill - NYTimes.com

There is a concerted effort to end women's right to safe and legal abortion in this country. In the links below, The New York Times calls federal and state efforts to further restrict reproductive freedoms an "outrageous government intrusion" and a "reckless effort to cripple an irreplaceable organization (Planned Parenthood) out of pure politics."

Why was the government willing to support reproductive freedoms in the 1970s, but now wants to do the opposite?

Colorado Bill would make pill illegal
"According to Leslie Hanks, one of Amendment 62's authors, it would make certain forms of the pill and other contraceptive devices illegal: 'Many of the oral contraceptives have an action that makes the womb inhospitable to a developing embryo and, hence, the new living, growing baby is prevented from residing where his or her creator intended until birth.'" for 2/ 7: GOP Anti-Choice Bill Includes Revision that Redefines Rape – by Discounting It

GOP Anti-Choice Bill Includes Revision that Redefines Rape – by Discounting It

This is scary. It's prpoblematic to have a bill that restricts government funds for abortion, since it is a legal procedure; but, it's even more problematic to say that if one is raped after someone drugged you, it's not rape. Are Boehner and Rep. Chris Smith going too far? Is this another backlash?

Why was this 9-year-old, Brisenia, shot?

Also, what might it have to do with Women's Studies?
